Careers Education Management and Key Skills
All students follow a structured programme of Careers Education Management. They have access to a range of 'enrichment' activities, including work experience and degree taster courses.
Gateway College students are prepared for a national Key Skills qualification. Through their regular work in different subject areas and timetabled Key Skills lessons, they build up a portfolio of evidence, monitored by their key kills tutor.
Support while you study
The popularity of Gateway College is explained in part by its friendly atmosphere. The pastoral arrangements are designed to make students feel at home as soon as possible, and to support then throughout their courses.
Students are assigned to one of four faculties according to the balance of their chosen course. General welfare and progress in academic or vocational courses are overseen by a Division-based personal tutor, working with the Head of Division and their team. All students are able to discuss their performance with subject teachers and with personal tutors.
Mentors are available for further support.
Students are required to manage their time effectively and to meet all coursework and project deadlines. Study targets are negotiated and set, action plans drawn up and progress reviewed at regular intervals.
Consultation evenings are held three times a year when students, with their parents, can talk to staff.
Guidance on careers is available at all times. The College Careers Library has an extensive stock of up-to-date literature on higher education and employment opportunities, and offers access to relevant interactive computer programs.
Personal help and advise may be sought from College staff and from Leicestershire 'Connexions' officers who visit Gateway regularly throughout the year.
